Trump Cites Time-Honored American Tradition of Stealing Land from Native People as Justification for Greenland Takeover

WASHINGTON, DC —President Trump defended his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland on Tuesday by pointing to what aides described as “a very proud, very consistent American tradition” of taking land from Indigenous people and calling it destiny.

“Look, this is what America does best,” Trump told reporters while gesturing vaguely at a map he appeared to be holding upside down. “We see land, we decide it could be doing more for us, and then we take it. Very historical. People don’t talk about it enough.”

Administration officials later clarified that the president was referring to centuries of U.S. precedent in which Native populations were displaced through treaties, forced relocations, and the creative redefinition of words like “empty,” “unused,” and “for your own good.” According to sources, Trump views Greenland and its 90% Inuit population, as “basically the same situation, just colder, ‘gassy-er’, and with better branding opportunities.”

“Some people live there already, sure,” Trump said. “But we’ve dealt with that before. We always figure something out. Reservations, relocation, strong apologies decades later—there’s a whole playbook.”

White House aides stressed that the takeover would be conducted “peacefully,” noting that America has historically used the term to describe nearly every land seizure in its past. One senior official explained that Inuit communities should feel reassured by promises of protection, economic opportunity, and cultural respect, all of which have been “famously durable commitments throughout U.S. history.”

Historians reacted with visible exhaustion. “This is not even subtext anymore,” said one expert, rubbing his temples. “He’s citing the crime as the justification.”

When asked whether Greenlanders would have any say in the matter, Trump appeared confused. “They already have a say,” he replied. “They’re saying no, which is exactly how this usually starts.”

“This isn’t theft,” Trump added. “It’s tradition.”
