WASHINGTON, D.C. — In one of the more unconventional intelligence strategies in modern American history, newly appointed Director of National Intelligence Brian Pulte announced Wednesday that the United States would begin offering aggressively marketed subprime mortgages to hostile foreign governments, terrorist organizations, and geopolitical rivals in an effort to destabilize them from within.
“Why spend trillions on military operations when we can just get America’s enemies into an adjustable-rate mortgage with a balloon payment?” Pulte reportedly asked while unveiling a PowerPoint presentation titled Operation Negative Equity.
According to intelligence officials, the program would target adversaries with enticing offers including zero-down-payment loans, teaser interest rates, and free stainless-steel appliance packages. Nations accepting the loans would initially enjoy low monthly payments before being abruptly introduced to concepts such as escrow shortages, variable interest adjustments, and mysterious lender fees that nobody can adequately explain.
“Historically, we’ve used sanctions, cyberwarfare, and diplomacy,” said one administration official. “But nothing has ever shattered a population’s morale quite like discovering your mortgage payment just increased 47 percent because of a clause on page 93.”
Under the proposal, hostile nations would be encouraged to purchase sprawling suburban developments they cannot afford. Intelligence analysts predict enemy leadership would spend so much time arguing with loan servicers that they would have little energy left for anti-American activities.
Critics noted that Trump’s appointment of a housing official to oversee the nation’s intelligence agencies is beyond dangerous. While expertise in mortgage rates, foreclosure prevention, and home construction may be valuable in many contexts, skeptics questioned how any of it prepares someone to manage espionage networks, analyze foreign threats, oversee classified operations, or brief the president on global security risks.
Regardless, at press time, several enemy governments had already applied for second homes they absolutely could not afford.
