MAR-A-LAGO — With gasoline prices climbing and a widening war with Iran rattling global energy markets, President Donald Trump on Monday urged Americans struggling at the pump to consider a simple alternative: electric golf carts.
Speaking briefly to reporters from the driver’s seat of a freshly charged cart at one of his golf courses, the president said the country may be overlooking what he described as “a very elegant transportation solution.”
“People keep talking about gas prices,” Trump said while idling near the first tee. “But have they tried electric golf carts? They’re tremendous. Quiet, efficient, and frankly a lot of fun.”
Energy markets have been roiled by the escalating conflict in the Middle East, with oil prices surging and gasoline costs rising across the United States as global supply routes face disruption. Economists warn the conflict could continue pushing prices higher if fighting intensifies or shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains unstable.
Despite the mounting economic pressure on American drivers, the president appeared largely relaxed as he spent the morning enjoying a leisurely round of golf, pausing occasionally to comment on the smooth acceleration of his electric cart.
According to aides, Trump had been briefed earlier in the day about rising fuel costs, global markets, and the latest developments in the war. The meeting reportedly ended when the president asked whether his golf cart had been fully charged before heading out to the course.
At one point during the round, Trump reportedly suggested that the government could help Americans transition to what he called “cart-based commuting,” noting that golf carts are already widely used at resorts and retirement communities.
“Honestly, if people drove these things instead of cars, we wouldn’t even be talking about gas prices,” he said while lining up a short putt. “You plug them in overnight, you wake up, and you’re ready to go. It’s beautiful.”
