PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA — Tech billionaire Peter Thiel this week unveiled plans for what he described as a “modestly precautionary” self-sustaining fortress built inside an active Argentine volcano, a facility reportedly engineered to survive market collapses, global pandemics, solar flares, artificial intelligence uprisings, and what project documents repeatedly refer to as “the plague of democracy.”
The sprawling underground compound, known internally as Liberty Caldera, will feature geothermal power, autonomous agriculture, a private data center, drone defense systems, and enough freeze-dried capybara meat to support a population of 200 venture capitalists for nearly three decades.
“People think this is about fear,” Thiel told reporters while standing in front of a 40-foot blast door disguised as a rock. “It’s actually about optimism. Optimism that civilization will eventually become so unbearable that I’ll need somewhere else to be.”
According to leaked blueprints, the facility contains luxury suites, a cryptocurrency mining cavern, a cryogenic preservation wing, and a secure conference room where residents can continue debating whether taxes should exist long after society has collapsed.
Local officials say construction crews have spent months excavating tunnels beneath the volcano while carefully avoiding any explanation of what they were building.
“We were told it was either a wellness retreat or the command center for a post-national technocratic enclave,” said one contractor. “Honestly, those are becoming difficult to distinguish.”
Thiel dismissed criticism that the project appears tailored exclusively for billionaires, noting that ordinary underage citizens will also be welcome to apply for entry through a rigorous screening process involving IQ tests, a swimsuit competition, and a brief essay on why they feel pedophilia is a construct of “woke” society.
