FIFA Shocked to Learn International Fans Unwilling to Spend $4,000 to Be Harassed for Their Papers

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND — FIFA officials expressed confusion and disappointment this week after discovering that many international soccer fans were reluctant to spend thousands of dollars on flights, hotels, and match tickets for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, only to be greeted by lengthy security screenings and detailed questioning about their social media history.

“We assumed supporters would jump at the opportunity,” said FIFA spokesperson Lars Mueller. “Who wouldn’t want to spend $4,000 to watch a match and then explain the purpose of their visit to three different government agencies?”

According to FIFA, organizers were blindsided by surveys showing that many fans preferred watching games from home rather than risking an airport experience that one respondent described as “a surprise oral exam about my travel history.”

The federation had reportedly invested millions into promotional materials highlighting America’s attractions, including world-class stadiums, vibrant cities, and the possibility of being selected for random screening despite already having gone through security.

“We thought the phrase ‘Please step aside, sir’ really captured the spirit of international competition,” said Mueller.

Fans from Europe, South America, and Africa expressed skepticism about the travel experience. “I love football,” said Argentine supporter Diego Fernandez. “But I also enjoy entering a country without feeling like I’m applying for a top-secret government clearance.”

Travel packages have struggled to sell despite offering what organizers call a complete World Cup experience, including airfare, accommodations, match tickets, and several opportunities to present identification documents.

FIFA executives remain optimistic, however.

“We’re confident attendance will improve once fans realize they may only need to show their passport, visa, return itinerary, proof of lodging, financial records, vaccination history, social media accounts, and a detailed explanation of why they support Arsenal,” said one official.

At press time, FIFA had announced a new premium hospitality package allowing fans to skip concession lines and proceed directly to secondary inspection.
