“No Kings” Rally Interrupted by Counter-Protesters Fiercely Defending Their Right to Oppose Rights

PORTLAND, OR — A peaceful “No Kings” rally in downtown Portland this weekend was briefly interrupted by a small group of counter-protesters who arrived to loudly defend their constitutional right to oppose the continued existence of constitutional rights. Organizers estimated the counter-protest turnout at “somewhere between a carpool and a fantasy football draft,” though participants insisted the enthusiasm per capita was “historic.”

Clutching signs reading “FREE SPEECH HAS GONE TOO FAR” and “RIGHTS AREN’T MEANT TO BE EXERCISED(EXCEPT NOW),” the group positioned themselves near the edge of the rally and began chanting about the dangers of unchecked liberties. “We fully support the First Amendment,” said one counter-protester through a megaphone, “which is why we’re here to tell these people to stop using it.”

Rally attendees initially assumed the group was part of an interactive civic education display. “I thought it was performance art,” said one participant. “Like, they were demonstrating the concept of irony in real time.” Others simply thanked the counter-protesters for unintentionally reinforcing the rally’s central message. “You really couldn’t script it better,” another attendee noted. “They’re exercising the exact freedoms they’re worried are being exercised.”

The counter-protesters, however, rejected the suggestion that there was any contradiction. “It’s completely different when we do it,” explained another participant, pausing to unfurl a flag large enough to blanket a car. “We’re using our rights responsibly, to argue that other people shouldn’t.”

Local police reported no incidents, aside from a brief moment when one counter-protester asked officers whether they could “temporarily suspend everyone else’s speech permit.” The request was declined.

The rally resumed without disruption shortly afterward, with organizers expressing appreciation for what they described as “an unplanned but highly effective demonstration of why we’re here.”
