WASHINGTON, DC — Organizers of the Great American State Fair announced Friday that record-breaking temperatures had forced both attendees to leave several hours ahead of schedule, temporarily reducing event attendance below the threshold required to describe it as “tens of thousands.”
The pair reportedly departed after concluding there were only so many times they could walk past the same plaster “historic” exhibit explaining how every measurable national problem had already been solved.
Fair officials blamed the weather, insisting the low turnout had nothing to do with the event’s programming, which included 14 separate pavilions celebrating presidential accomplishments, a gift shop selling commemorative gold-plated Trump memorabilia, and an educational exhibit demonstrating how unfavorable polling is created by biased statisticians.
“We were on pace for our biggest crowd yet,” one spokesperson said while standing in front of several acres of empty pavement. “Unfortunately, the sun became so hot that Americans simply couldn’t continue expressing their patriotism outdoors.”
The National Weather Service had warned of dangerous heat, though fair organizers maintained temperatures merely felt higher because attendees were experiencing an overwhelming sense of freedom.
Vendors spent much of the afternoon attempting to sell “official” Great American State Fair memorabilia to one another, while volunteers were reassigned from crowd control to periodically applauding near the main stage to create the impression that something was happening.
Meanwhile, the fair’s giant television screens continued looping promotional videos celebrating record attendance, with organizers noting there was no reason to update them simply because circumstances had changed.
Officials also emphasized that the event remained a tremendous success by every meaningful metric they had personally developed earlier that day.
At press time, organizers announced they were exploring several improvements for next year’s fair, including larger cooling tents, additional patriotic exhibits, and replacing attendance counts with “enthusiasm estimates,” which they described as “far more accurate than the old system of physically counting people.”
