WASHINGTON, DC — In a sweeping restructuring of U.S. military doctrine, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Friday that the Air Force would be formally disbanded, explaining that “angels will handle air superiority from here on out.” The decision, unveiled during a press conference flanked by what aides described as “conceptual renderings of cherubs in tactical formation,” is part of a broader effort to transition the armed forces toward what Hegseth called “faith-based defense solutions.”
“For too long we’ve relied on jets, satellites, and radar,” Hegseth said, gesturing dismissively at a nearby F-35 poster already being removed from the wall. “But history shows that divine intervention has an undefeated record. Frankly, it’s time we let celestial assets take the lead.”
The decision comes just days after Hegseth dismissed high level generals without grounds. Some worry the Secretary is rebuilding a theocratic military based on his strong religious beliefs.
According to internal memos, all Air Force personnel will be reassigned to roles supporting the new “Heavenly Air Command,” including prayer logistics, hymn-based communications, and what one document described as “cloud observation and theological air traffic control.” Pilots were reportedly encouraged to “retain confidence in their calling,” though officials clarified that their flight experience “may not translate directly to winged beings operating on a higher plane.”
Critics expressed concern about the transition, noting that angels have yet to complete standard NATO interoperability exercises. Hegseth dismissed those worries. “These are eternal warriors,” he said. “They don’t need refueling, they don’t get tired, and they’ve been operating above us this whole time. It’s actually a massive cost savings.”
Pentagon contractors have already begun retrofitting air bases into what procurement documents describe as “launch points for prayer-based deployment.” Meanwhile, former Air Force generals were seen quietly packing up their offices while attempting to confirm whether the new chain of command includes archangels or “just regular angels with leadership potential.”
Hegseth concluded the announcement by assuring Americans that the skies remain secure. “If you look up,” he said, pausing meaningfully, “you’ll know we’re covered. Literally.”
