NEW YORK, NY — Defense officials were left in shock today after President Trump announced the nomination of longtime cable news audio technician Dale “Levels” Granger to lead United States Strategic Command, the branch responsible for overseeing the nation’s nuclear arsenal.
Granger, whose résumé includes 17 years of ensuring panelists on Fox News are consistently louder than one another, is widely respected in his field for his ability to “ride the gain” during heated segments and mute guests milliseconds before they say something legally actionable. According to the administration, those skills translate seamlessly to nuclear deterrence.
“Dale understands escalation,” Trump said, “When things get quiet, he knows how to make them very loud, very fast. That’s what strength is.” Granger would join the growing list of Fox News personalities already serving the president.
Pentagon officials confirmed that Granger’s interview process consisted primarily of identifying which microphone was live while being shouted at by three producers and a chyron operator. Sources say he passed with “tremendous clarity.”
If confirmed, Granger would assume responsibility for a command that manages intercontinental ballistic missiles, strategic bombers, and submarine-launched nuclear weapons. Granger did not ask for the position, but was picked from the small remaining pool of Fox News employees not already on the president’s payroll.
Allies expressed cautious optimism that Granger’s experience cutting to break during on-air meltdowns could prove useful in de-escalating global crises. Critics, however, worry that his instinct to “bring everyone’s levels up” may lead to unprecedented volumes of brinkmanship.
Reached for comment, Granger said he’s reluctant about the challenge. “I’m a boom operator. I think maybe the ‘BOOM’ part is why they picked me?” he explained, adjusting fader. “I really don’t know a whole lot about nuclear war. But I guess I’m ready to listen and learn?”
The Senate is expected to hold confirmation hearings as soon as they can verify his lack of qualifications.
